“How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?” – Psalm 13:1, KJV
Reflection
There are seasons when silence feels louder than words. You pray, but nothing seems to move. You ask, but no answer seems to come. You wait, but the waiting begins to feel like rejection. In those moments, faith can feel less like confidence and more like holding on with tired hands.
Psalm 13 gives us permission to say what many wounded believers are afraid to admit. David does not pretend. He does not dress his pain in polite religious language. He asks God, “How long?” That question is not unbelief by itself. Sometimes it is the cry of a heart that still believes God is there, but cannot understand why He feels hidden.
Spiritual disappointment often creates a painful confusion. We may know what Scripture says about God’s love, yet still feel forgotten. We may believe He hears prayer, yet wonder why our own prayers seemed to fall unanswered. We may remember seasons when God felt near, yet now feel as if we are reaching into emptiness.
But the very fact that David brings this question to God matters. He does not walk away from the Lord with his grief. He carries his grief into God’s presence. That is still faith. It may be wounded faith. It may be trembling faith. It may be faith with tears in its eyes. But it is faith.
When God feels silent, the enemy often whispers that silence means absence. But Scripture shows us something deeper. Many of God’s people walked through seasons where they could not see His hand clearly. Yet His silence did not mean He had stopped caring. His hiddenness did not mean He had abandoned them.
Today, you do not have to force yourself to feel strong. You do not have to explain your pain away. You can simply begin where David began: “How long, O Lord?” That prayer may not sound polished, but it is honest. And honest prayer is still prayer.
God is not offended by the ache in your voice. He is not surprised by your questions. The One who inspired this psalm made room in Scripture for a hurting believer to ask why. That means there is room for your questions too.
You may not feel held today. But feeling forgotten is not the same as being forgotten. The silence may be real, but it is not the whole story.
Prayer
Lord, I do not know why You feel silent right now. I do not want to pretend that this season has been easy. Help me bring You my honest heart, even when my faith feels weak. Remind me that silence is not the same as abandonment. Hold me close, even when I cannot feel it. Amen.

Where have I mistaken God’s silence for God’s absence?
